Student outdoor adventure camps (3-5 days)

Itineraries are flexible but can include: sea and river swimming, surfing, sea kayaking, canoeing, caving, high rope confidence courses, Tongariro Alpine Crossing, mountain biking, horse riding, orienteering, search and rescue excerises, paintball and farm challenges including sheep shearing, goat milking and drafting – to name a few!

Student canoe trips Whanganui River (2-5 days)

Gently paddle through the unspoilt beauty of the Whanganui River. It’s an extremely safe river to navigate however there are a few small rapids to make the trip more challenging. Activities include walking over the famous ‘Bridge to Nowhere’, staying on a marae, outdoor cooking and camping under the stars. This trip is the ultimate for team building and leadership development.

Outdoor electives EOTC (1 day)

Gives students an opportunity to experience outdoor activities which are non-traditional schools sports such as caving, kayaking, horse riding, fishing, mountain biking, river rafting, surfing, sailing, high ropes courses, paintball, and cultural and thermal visits.
The outdoor electives are ideal for extra large groups and are a good substitute for school camps. We can take entire Year groups at a time – we organise 450 17-year-olds each year for a large and highly respected college in Auckland.

WHY GO ADRIFT IN NEW ZEALAND?

New Zealand's spectacularly beautiful landscape includes rugged mountains, steaming volcanoes, sweeping coastlines, emerald green lakes and lush forests.
Comparable in size and/or shape to Great Britain, Colorado or Japan, New Zealand has a population of only 4 million - making it one of the world's least crowded countries. It is a haven for those seeking peace, rejuvenation and relaxation as well as a playground for thrill seekers and adventurers. A temperate climate with relatively small seasonal variation makes it an ideal year-round holiday destination.
The culture of its indigenous Maori people affects the language, the arts, and even the accents of all New Zealanders. Their place in the South Pacific and their love of the outdoors, sport, and the arts make New Zealanders and their culture unique in the world.

Is it just a holiday?

It’s more than that! On every day of the tour you’ll have at least one exciting activity which will be both fun and challenging. No previous experience is needed for any of our activities. We can also incorporate activities that support your specific curriculum requirements: geology, social studies and physical education components are common themes in our school tours.

How big are the tour groups?

Our tour groups are usually made up of students from one school (a minimum of 20 is required). Sometimes we also have groups of students from a variety of schools. Students who get the most out of our tours are aged 13 to 17. Supervision is provided at a ratio of at least one adult to every ten students.

Where do we stay?

  • backpacker hostels (four-bed lodge-style accommodation),
  • Kiwi baches (traditional NZ holiday homes which are hugely popular with locals AND tourists)
  • tents (for canoe trips only)

NB – Adrift always ensures that our groups have their own exclusive area when using public accommodation such as backpacker hostels.

How do we get around?

Depending on the group size, either by bus or van with an entertaining and knowledgeable commercially-certified driver.

What do we need to bring?

Individual clothing requirements will be provided for each camp. We provide all other equipment so don’t bother packing your own canoe!

Who looks after us?

Stewart Barclay has been adventure guiding throughout New Zealand for over ten years and has and thousands of happy customers. His three daughters, aged 14-22, have all inherited his passion for the outdoors and regularly join him on Kiwi adventures. Stew is supported by his professional crew who love showing New Zealand off as much as he does.

What sort of meals do we get?

We serve only good Kiwi tucker such as locally grown fruit, cereal, spaghetti on toast; home-made sandwiches, BBQ dinners, traditional Maori hangi, fish and chips.

This sounds great, how do I sign up?

Adrift can get you underway by supplying approval forms and documentation for you to send home with students. All you have to do is coordinate the pre-departure arrangements for the group – generally all this includes is obtaining parental approval, collecting payment and turning up to the airport. Don’t forget that one teacher tours completely free for every twelve students in your group!
