About Adrift

We are an outdoor adventure guiding company based in the Central Plateau and at Whangapoua in the Coromandel. We like to spend our days in and amongst New Zealand’s world famous landscape including but not limited to The Tongariro National Park, The Whanganui National Park and The Coromandel Peninsular.

Stewart Barclay heads up Adrift which was started in 2000 when at 20,000 feet in the Andes he decided to create a career in an area for which he had a lifetime of experience and passion. Stewart has 3 daughters all of whom either attend or help on the camps when needed. Adrift camps are personally run by Stewart and his team which is made up of family, student’s parents, employees, Maddie the dog and Snotty the cat. Employees have worked with Adrift on other activities and have satisfied the existing team that they have the qualifications and ability to supervise students.

If any reference or testimonial is required please make contact with Stewart who will forward contacts of previous camp parents

The focus for the summer and autumn holiday camps is on safety, fun and enjoying the outdoors in an organised, supervised yet relaxed atmosphere. Students get to live a week in the beautiful Coromandel Peninsular and experience a wide range of fun summer outdoor activities including:- kayaking, surfing, body boarding, fishing, horse riding, snorkelling, bush walks and small treks, historic train ride, hot pools, and lots of swimming and relaxing.

Location

Adrift Camps are based at either Waikawau Bay (1 hour drive north of Coromandel Township) or at Whangapoua (½ hour drive east of Coromandel Township).

Accommodation and Meals

Accommodation will be camping at Waikawau or Whangapoua unless the weather dictates that we seek more weather proof alternatives.
Lunch on Monday and dinner on Friday, are not included and takeaways are a good idea. It is suggested that children have a small amount of change for lunch on the way down and for an evening meal on the way back up. Whilst they do not need money for snacks during the week, the kids can’t resist when we stop at Coromandel.

Meals are generally outdoor camping type meals:

  • Breakfasts are fruit and cereal, toast made on the hot plate, spaghetti, mince on toast, bacon and eggs and my favourite, pancakes...mm
  • Lunch is sandwiches, filled rolls and fruit
  • Dinner consists of; fish if we catch enough, sausages, spaghetti bolognaise hamburgers and nachos. Salads and/or vegetables.
  • Dessert is whatever we can manage on the night, such as apple crumble, ice cream and pancakes
