About Adrift

We are an outdoor adventure guiding company based in the Central Plateau and at Whangapoua in the Coromandel. We like to spend our days in and amongst New Zealand’s world famous landscape including but not limited to The Tongariro National Park, The Whanganui National Park and The Coromandel Peninsular.

Stewart Barclay heads up Adrift which was started in 2000 when at 20,000 feet in the Andes he decided to create a career in an area for which he had a lifetime of experience and passion. Stewart has 3 daughters all of whom either attend or help on the camps when needed. Adrift camps are personally run by Stewart and his team which is made up of family, student’s parents, employees, Maddie the dog and Snotty the cat. Employees have worked with Adrift on other activities and have satisfied the existing team that they have the qualifications and ability to supervise students.

If any reference or testimonial is required please make contact with Stewart who will forward contacts of previous camp parents

The focus for the ski and snowboard holiday camps is on safety, fun and enjoying the outdoors in an organized and supervised, yet relaxed atmosphere. Students get to live a week in the beautiful Tongariro National Park and experience the Whakapapa and/or Turoa ski-fields.

About the Camps

Snow Camps run during the winter and spring school holidays. Three days full skiing or snowboarding PLUS one day black water rafting. We make sure that we are on Whakapapa or Turoa ski fields skiing or snowboarding at every opportunity. We drive the group down on Monday morning and spend Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday skiing and boarding. We return to Auckland on Friday stopping at Waitomo on the way for a great black-water caving experience. We only resort to other additional activities on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, if the mountain is closed.
Supervision and Age

Ages range from 10-16 years. We can take children out side of these ages under certain conditions. Camps are structured into two age groups being 10-13 and 14-16 as there are separate requirements and supervisory roles for these ages. Parents are welcome to attend either for the whole camp or for a couple of nights ...come along its fun!
  • Supervision at the accommodation is a minimum of 1 Adult to 10 children.
  • Beginners Ski area, including Happy Valley, Mead’s Wall and Alpine Meadows. 1 Adult to 10 children.
  • Upper Mountain for children with sufficient but minimal experience, the ratio will be 1 Adult to 6 children
  • Upper Mountain where the experience is sufficient, then children will be paired off and liaise with supervisors 3 times during the course of the day.

Accommodation and meals

Accommodation will be at the Ruapehu Camp Kakahi, unless otherwise notified. Groups will be divided into age groups and male and female. All meals whilst we are at the lodge are provided. Children will be expected to help. Monday lunch and Friday dinner is not included as we are in transit. Stops for these meal breaks are made at Subway and it is suggested that children have a small amount of change for lunch on the way to the mountains, and evening meal on the way back to Auckland. Whilst they do not need money for snacks (very expensive), up the mountain, the kids usually can’t resist.

Wet-weather Activities

Should the mountain be closed, then alternate activities will be organised. These activities include; Indoor climbing wall, rafting-Turangi, canoeing-Whanganui or Turangi, Tokaau hot pools & hungi, bush walks-Tongariro or Mountain Biking-Fishers Track. These activities are included in the camp fee.
