The Tongariro National Park

The Tongariro National Park has a duel world-heritage status with UNESCO for it’s natural and cultural significance. It is a truly stunning part of the world.

Three active andesitic volcanoes dominate the scenery of the area. These are Mt Tongariro (1967m), Mt Ngauruhoe (2291m) and Mt Ruapehu (2797m). These natural wonders have formed over the last 300,000 years by the volcanic eruptions of at least six cones.

Intense volcanic activity and retreating glaciers from the ice age have sculpted the land. The amazing textures and colours of the landscape tell a story of the ongoing relationship between fire and ice.

The northern circuit is part of the Department of Conservation Great-Walks network, and is highly regarded as one of the best multi-day trips in the country.
