Tuesday 29 September

Southwesterly gale force winds with a low freezing level. Avalanche risk likely to be considerable above 1800m. it’s a sitting by a warm fire and sipping brandy day.

Wednesday 30 September

Southwesterly winds abating, avalanche rating likely to be considerable for where we want to walk (above 1800m).
Wind: SW 40 km/hr
Precipitation: 0 mm

Freeze Level: 1300m.

Thursday 1 October

Should be light winds and maybe clear skies, a great day to make fresh tracks in the new snow, quite cold. Avalanche risk possibly moderate below 2300m.

Friday 2 October

Moderate north westerly winds. The morning is looking ok, but the day looks to be deteriorating slowly to cloud and maybe light rain.  Avalanche risk possibly moderate below 1800m.

Saturday 3 October

Strong west turning southwesterly winds will bring cloud and likely light rain in the afternoon. Turning cool in the afternoon. Avalanche risk possibly moderate above 1800m.

Sunday 4 October

Strong southwesterly winds. Possibly some cloud, maybe cool. Avalanche risk possibly moderate above 1800m.

Monday 5 October

Strong southwesterly winds. Possibly some cloud, maybe cool. Avalanche risk possibly moderate above 1800m.

Track and weather conditions.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is in winter snow conditions, which should last until mid October. Weather conditions in all New Zealand mountains are very changeable. Be prepared to experience low visibility, high winds and rain. The weather variability means you MUST HAVE good outdoor clothing and an understanding of what the weather will be like on the day in front of you. Our guides are fully experienced and qualified to make these decisions for you. Just ask. We have a shop with all the outdoor clothing needs to keep you comfortable and safe.

You are walking on an active volcano with the safest possible alert level of zero. However volcanoes can erupt at anytime without notice. Volcanic experts say that hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is vastly safer on our guided tour than driving a car.
